Castiel flinched at Dean’s scream and instantly straightened up, “Dean, you need to lie still,” Castiel said, his voice drowned by Dean’s cries. The angel quickly grabbed the sides of Dean’s face and wanted to freeze up again when he saw the liquid grace tears streaming down his lover’s face.
As the latest contraction gripped her bulging belly, her tail curling of its own accord in reaction to the pain, she groaned, “Not a million times, Tris, maybe just two or three.” Her eyes were scrunched shut in an effort to block everything, including the pain, out.
I am an advocate for reproductive choice. I am an advocate for trans* rights. I embrace the diverse gender spectrum and a person’s right to choose how they identify themselves, whether man, woman or neither. […] I don’t understand the grossed out objections to mpreg. I don’t know if it’s because it’s something normally associated with women’s bodies, and so deemed gross, or if it’s seen as beneath men somehow. I know it’s not even close to being physically possible, but neither are werewolves, for goodness sake. What’s wrong with imagining a world where your ability to reproduce isn’t exclusive or determined by chance? What’s wrong with exploring that subversion of a previously extremely one-sided and gendered experience?
In a post apocalyptic world where Alphas, Betas, and Omegas struggle to keep living, Will Graham finds himself at the mercy of a grieving Count and must negotiate through his life and try not to fall in love. When he finally finds his way out, he learns he’s not so ready to let go of Hannibal Lecter.
Other critics are similar in their generalisations and cite many reasons they have a problem with this genre’s treatment of gender roles. I have tried to organise the following list by topic as much as possible, but the categories frequently overlap.
A uterine transplant was performed in Saudi Arabia in 2000, from one woman to another, but it did not result in a pregnancy. This advance drew speculation about the possibility of a male receiving a womb transplant, and bearing a child from the transplanted womb.
The street was unnaturally packed today as Ikki Nomura walked through the crowd with a bag of groceries. Adjusting his glasses, he huffed and pushed his way through to see what was up with all the hustle and bustle that had suddenly stirred up in the town. It’s a lively town here but this is ridiculous. He thought with a snort.
When not exorcising the voices in her head, she toils away in a retail job that tests her patience and gives her lots of story fodder. She can also be found in her kitchen, pretending she’s an amateur chef and trying to not poison herself or others with her cuisine experiments.

Galadra panted as another contraction seized her swollen belly. Pushing accomplished nothing, no matter how hard the tip of her massive egg ground against her cervix. She had been in labor for 5 hours, the last two of those were spent straining and pushing in vain. The witch had induced a quick labor given that after only 3 hours Gala was fully dilated. The healers and midwives did everything in their power to help the princess lay the egg. From squatting to kneeling to a bath of warm water, no position budged the egg from it’s resting place. Their magic was powerless as well. No amount of spells or chants reduced the egg
His lips twitched into a smile, though. It was worth it, -and he’d do it again- because inside his little home was the only reason he’d ever cut back in smoking willingly. He hummed and ran a hand through his long red hair. Think it’s time I cut it again, before the baby’s born… He smiled fondly.

Fempreg refers not to all stories in which women are pregnant, but to stories in which conception is due to f/f sex. It is almost vanishingly rare and would probably not have a name if it were not for mpreg’s popularity. Xena: Warrior Princess has a rare example of canonical fempreg with Callisto’s ghost impregnating Xena.
Braun is an unmated Omega in a world of Alphas, Betas and Omegas. Omegas are the lowest of the lowest, and it is totally alright to abuse an omega, since they’re worth nothing in the society A.M. Arthur created.
By way of the inherent parallels between Alpha/Omega and male/female, male Omegas take on an interesting position in Omegaverse. Their experiences often mirror those of women in certain context in “real life” and reflect gender stereotypes and dynamics back at us. In that, A/B/O holds a mirror up to nature, so to speak, which proves to be a major plus for some of my participants:
In a surprising (to me) twist, the male omega had a cock, an ass that was breedable, but no testicles. At first I was surprised and a bit disappointed by this, as one of the reasons I like omegaverse stories is the male-male action, especially leading to pregnancy. I’m already a bit hesitant about some of this genre, as Alphas are often hyper-masculine and, except for their equipment, the male omegas often take on very traditionally feminine roles. Although I very much appreciate gender-challenging characters, I am also a bit disappointed when it’s always the top, Alpha who takes on the masculine roles and the receptive, bottom, omega who takes on traditionally female roles. (Also, tops that constantly penetrate their male partner but who never let a bottom near their own entrance is a particular turn off of mine, but par for the course in omegaverse novels.) When these roles are so strongly separated, it seems to me one might as well just write male/female stories.
“I guess I just never found the right mate. The idea of fledglings always appealed to me, but I never found the right alpha – those are the angels who sire the fledgling – and so I never had the chance. If I’m being honest, fledglings have been my main wish, but I didn’t want to deal with a mate I barely tolerated for the sake of offsprings.”
Castiel smiled as he held the celestial being in his arms and he felt his grace melt when those blue orbs met his. He held the being close to him for a moment before slowly handing it over to Dean, who was just staring with wide, adoring eyes.
Braun Etting is an omega stuck in the cruel world of the alphas. Omegas are treated as inferior property to do with what you will. An omega must defer to their alpha, alphas must give permission for others to speak to their omegas, omegas are mere breeding vessels, there is no law against an alpha ‘disciplining’ their omega…Braun wants nothing to do with alphas. His father resented him and his brother because both were born lowly omegas. When Braun’s father dies he is sent to a halfway house that are supposed to be ‘safe’ for unmated omegas. One night Braun witnesses something he wants no part of…so he runs.
As the gentle omega of his pack, Jesse has always felt content and in harmony with the peaceful surroundings of Sunset Valley—the soft, smooth sand dunes, monolithic purple mountains and cozy clusters of trees, all nestled under a canopy of indigo sky filled with endless sparkling stars.
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
“I can’t!! The egg, it’s too huge!” He cried, bearing down at another contraction and grunting and groaning while he pushed. The egg pushed out a little further, stretching him more. He could swear he was being torn in half from the egg and baby.
Anna Fox lives alone – a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times…and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.
Adam scream died down when a contraction stopped. He could feel the egg at his opening as the tip would come out with pushing, yet go back in when he stopped. Knowing this wasn’t one of the small eggs, Adam wondered how big it was although was afraid to ask. The other man was talking to the egg almost like it would come out.
2. (Bound By) Clandestine Addiction by Shinguresan: They were drawn together, irrationally, irrevocably. In the face of fear, hate and pain they always felt the pull to return. For a bond unwittingly formed by Harry’s fatal spell? Or something…else? ***And this one is over 250k words! Awarning that the sex is very explicit yet the writing is fantastic. Excellent characterization and feels-a-plenty.
As I walked into the house my cat Mavis ran to me and licked my face a million times giving me kisses. I pet him and smiled. “Hi Mavis. I got you something awesome.” I said as I set the bags on the counter. “Sweet boy what are you doing?” I asked as he started to sniff the bags.
And while magpieinthemorning (female, bi, 30-40, Germany) dislikes “romanticizing and normalizing the existing gender oppression in our society” when it comes to A/B/O, she adds: “Disclaimer: it’s possible that the couple of omegaverse fics I read were extreme and not representative of the genre. However, they were widely recommended by members of the fandom (that’s how I found them).”
3. Faith by Dragongirl16: What if the wizarding world turned its back on Harry? Who will stay true? Who can he turn to? What will he do? ***A few words about this one: This story was written during the golden age of HP fanfiction (early 2000s) so the many cliches that we all make fun of today are included in here. HOWEVER, I do believe that those many fics were actually modeled after this one. The writing is nothing amazing, and could’ve benefited from a beta (were there even betas back in 2003..?) but the plot is actually one of the most original that I have ever read. I wasn’t able to put this story (and its sequel!) down. I still think about it to this day. This story with its sequel amount to over half a million words fyi.
Not everyone likes mpreg – it was one of the most frequently named squicks in an earlier section of my survey – as the following quotes will illustrate. All are in reply to “Name your least favourite thing about Omegaverse” and tie into other items on this list as well:
Each book I read in the series brings me a new favorite couple, so basically it means I love all the couples whose stories we’ve gotten so far and Constable Karter Jenks and Jax Orris are no exception. This story moves on from brothers Braun and Kell, but they are still here with their mates and friends, helping out and moving forward.
Everyone at the reserve was anxious. The person who was the most anxious however, was the head of the stables, Georgina Whitney. Not only was she in charge of the stables, but she was in charge of a specific stable. The Flok stable.
